Dial-A-Ride

Jefferson Transit offers Dial-A-Ride as its ADA-compliant paratransit service. This reservation-based service is available to Jefferson County residents whose disability or health condition prevents them from using fixed-route services. Dial-A-Ride operates as a shared origin-to-destination ride service, meaning passengers travel together and may not follow the most direct route to their destination.

Service Area and Trip Purpose
The Dial-A-Ride service area extends 3/4 of a mile beyond Jefferson Transit’s fixed-route bus lines within Jefferson County. Service locations and times mirror those of the fixed-route service, with limited service also provided to Marrowstone Island, Kala Point, and Cape George.

Eligibility and Application Process
Eligibility for Dial-A-Ride is a transportation-based decision, not a medical one. The presence of a disability or disabling health condition does not automatically qualify an individual for the service. Eligibility is determined by the individual’s current functional ability to use fixed-route buses.

Eligibility may be classified as conditional, unconditional, or temporary as defined by ADA regulations.

  • Unconditional: An individual is unable to use fixed route transit services under any circumstances and is thus eligible to make all trips using paratransit
  • Conditional: An individual meets eligibility criteria with respect to some trips but not others, the individual shall be ADA paratransit eligible only for those trips for which he or she meets the criteria.
  • Temporary: Individuals who experience a temporary loss of functional ability that prevents them from using fixed route service.

To apply, fill out the Dial-A-Ride application or you can request an application packet by mail. An eligibility response letter will be mailed to you within 21 days of receiving the fully completed application. If you have not received an answer within 21 days, you will be treated as eligible and provided services until an answer is received.
